“My job is to make sure that there is enough money budgeted by the federal government for the maintenance/ repairs of the dam,” – Ned Nwoko
I attracted the Ogwashi – Uku dam project when I was in the house of reps. The first design was done by South Koreans that I paid privately before Benin Owenna basin took over. Then pascal Adigwe continued with the project. Upon my election, management and staff of Benin Owena River Basin Authority paid me a visit on what remains to be done to make sure that the dam is maintained and properly utilized for the purposes for which it was built. I visited the dam in their company, and we also visited Olor and Olodu communities because of our discussions on integrated farming using irrigation from the dam. We were at the stage where the distribution of water for household use to about 60 communities must be done by the state government. I have discussed this at various times with the state government. I have neither recommended any contractor to the state nor the federal government. As the senator, my job is to make sure that there is enough money budgeted by the federal government for the maintenance/ repairs of the dam and for the state government to take over and complete the water reticulation to the communities. Anyone is free to support any project in Delta North, but for now, it is my duty, in partnership with other representatives, to make sure that we complete all existing projects and initiate new ones where possible.
I have also initiated another dam in Idumuje Ugboko, which is in the current budget. I also believe that we should have sufficient clean water supply to our homes/offices and for irrigation so that we can farm all year round as they do in the north.
