At the VTB Russia Calling! Investment Forum in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the deep spiritual connection he believes exists between Russia and Africa. Speaking at the annual event, Putin praised Africa’s commitment to sovereignty and its immense potential for economic growth.
“Africa may geographically seem like a rather distant continent, but it is spiritually close to us,” Putin remarked, highlighting the shared values of sovereignty and independence cherished by both Russia and African nations. “They value their sovereignty and make decisions in the interests of their peoples and countries, and we believe they will continue to do so,” he added.
Putin further described Africa as a “reliable partner” with whom Russia shares extensive ties. He commended the bravery of African nations, noting their dedication to freedom and self-determination, which he said mirrors Russia’s values.
The Russian president also underscored Africa’s vast potential for rapid development, a sentiment echoed by experts worldwide. “The African continent has very good development prospects. These are not just our evaluations but also those of the global expert community, including Western experts,” Putin said.

He cited Ethiopia as an example of Africa’s extraordinary growth, pointing out that its economy has expanded by as much as 120% over the past decade. He expressed optimism that Russia would continue to deepen partnerships with African countries, focusing on areas of mutual growth while ignoring external pressures.
The forum, hosted at Moscow’s World Trade Center from December 4 to 5, is now in its 15th edition. Themed “The Future of Capital and the Capital of the Future,” the event draws government officials, business leaders, and investors to discuss macroeconomic trends and foster collaboration.
First held in 2009, the Russia Calling! forum has become a platform for advancing Russia’s financial sovereignty and exploring new opportunities with global partners, including those in Africa.
