Scholarship: ASUU-OAU awards four students scholarships
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Obafemi Awolowo University, Osun State Branch, has awarded scholarships to four indigent students.
A statement by the Chairman of the Branch, Prof Anthony Odiwe, explained that the award is a demonstration of the Union’s support for Nigerian students’ tertiary education in the face of problems bedeviling the University educational system including but not limited to poor funding, lack of infrastructures and facilities needed for quality education.
He revealed that ASUU instituted this annual scholarship scheme in 2018 for indigent students in all branches of the Union and it has continued till date despite the challenges being faced by the Union.
He explained that 44 indigent students applied for the two-scholarship space of the national body of N200,000 each in OAU. In addition to the support from the National body, the branch also awarded a sum of N50,000 each to two other students who applied and were ranked third and fourth in position, to assist them in their education.
The students are Mutiyal Olayiwola (CGPA-4.61), part three, Department of Microbiology; Pelumi Adeoye (CGPA-4.28), part two, Public Administration; Jesutowo Ademola (CGPA-3.27), part two Department of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering, and Elijah Adelowo (CGPA-3.27), part two Department of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering.
Odiwe implored the government to pay more attention to the funding of tertiary education and improve conditions of service, especially on the issue of remuneration.
He said the union would continue to press home the need for government to do the needful to reposition the universities to be able to compete favorably.
Present at the event were the Welfare Secretary of the Branch, Prof. Bola Mapayi; Vice-Chairperson, Prof. Olomola who was the Convener of the Committee that selected the students, Secretary of the Union, Dr. Tunde Amusan, Financial Secretary, Dr. wale Adebayo; Prof. Saka Gbadamosi, Investment Officer, a member of the Committee, Dr. Omoneye Olasanmi and other Committed members of the Branch, such as Profs. Saheed Adekilekun and Femi Ajayi.
