Rema to feature on Glo-Sponsored CNN’s African Voices Changemakers this Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
Globacom-sponsored CNN International magazine programme, African Voices Changemakers, will spotlight Nigerian Afrobeats sensation, singer-songwriter, and multiple award-winner, Rema, this weekend.
Rema first gained recognition through his Instagram posts. A viral freestyle to D’Prince’s song, Gucci Gang, captured the star’s attention, leading D’Prince to invite him to Lagos and offer him a record deal with Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records, owned by music executive and producer, Don Jazzy. His 2019 hit, Dumebi, was the first success of this contract.
Rema’s international breakthrough arrived in 2022 with his single Calm Down, which later featured a remix with American singer, Selena Gomez.
The song reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and held the top position on the Billboard Afrobeats Songs chart for a record-setting 58 weeks.
His success was further cemented on 7 November 2022 when he received an award for achieving 1 billion streams worldwide during his London concert. Rema also performed at the prestigious Ballon d’Or ceremony at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, France, on 30 October 2023.
African Voices Changemakers will air on CNN this Saturday at 8:30 a.m., with repeats at noon the same day. Additional repeats are scheduled for Sunday at 4:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., and Monday at 4:00 a.m.
Divine Ikubor, born in 2000, known professionally as Rema, hails from Edo State, Nigeria.
His passion for music was ignited while performing in church and at his secondary school, Ighile Group of Schools in Edo State, where he entertained his peers with songs.
