A Complete Guid: Adeleke Presents Practical Ways To Tribute MKO Abiola
Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State emphasized the significance of conducting free and fair elections as a tribute to the late Chief MKO Abiola and other democracy heroes. In a statement released by his spokesperson, Mr. Olawale Rasheed, to mark Democracy Day in Osogbo, Adeleke highlighted that the 1993 Presidential election, despite being annulled, stood as Nigeria’s fairest and freest to date. This led to the shift in celebrating Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12, as instituted by the former President Muhammadu Buhari administration in 2018.
Adeleke underscored that free and fair elections are vital to sustaining a robust democracy, acknowledging the sacrifices made for the country’s return to civilian rule in 1999. He called upon Nigerian politicians to uphold democratic principles by respecting the electorate’s choices and committing to fortifying the electoral process to ensure transparency and prevent subversion of the people’s will.
The governor emphasized that celebrating democracy entails safeguarding its core tenets, including conducting elections devoid of manipulation and adhering to the rule of law. He stressed that leaders at all levels must recommit themselves to these ideals, asserting that electoral integrity must be preserved at all costs to honor the memory of democratic icons like Chief MKO Abiola.
