Former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has underscored the importance of China as a vital economic partner for Africa.
Speaking in Beijing during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and members of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), Obasanjo highlighted China’s contributions to Africa’s development through infrastructure, technology transfer, and personnel exchange.
Representing the InterAction Council, an organization of former Presidents and Heads of Government, Obasanjo praised the 70-year partnership between China and Africa.
He urged China to continue advancing its cooperation with Africa to promote global peace and prosperity.
In a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo commended President Xi for his unwavering support of global cooperation and multilateralism.
“Your leadership has not only solidified China’s rise and development but has also been a driving force for global peace and stability,” he said.
Reflecting on China-Africa relations, Obasanjo noted that the partnership has flourished, particularly over the last two decades, with China becoming Africa’s largest bilateral trading partner.
“Our cooperation has advanced infrastructure development and facilitated technological growth, positioning Sino-African relations as a successful model of people-to-people diplomacy.”
Obasanjo also acknowledged China’s success in lifting over 800 million people out of poverty in 40 years, describing it as a source of inspiration for Africa’s own development goals.
“China’s example shows us what is possible when leaders are committed to improving the lives of their people. Africa seeks to continue this friendship and partnership as we strive to uplift our own people from poverty,” he added.
Expressing the honour of being invited to celebrate CPAFFC’s 70th anniversary, Obasanjo reiterated the shared goals of the InterAction Council and the CPAFFC.
“Both organizations are committed to promoting global peace, development, and cooperation. People-to-people relations are a powerful force in fostering international collaboration,” he said.
Obasanjo affirmed that the InterAction Council will continue working closely with CPAFFC to deepen exchanges and understanding between nations, contributing to global peace and development.
