Mass resignation of coaches hits Spanish Women’s team over Rubiales kiss
Several coaching staff of the Spanish Women’s national team have dropped their resignation following Luis Rubiales’ controversial kiss of star player Jenni Hermoso.
Rubiales kissed midfielder Hermoso on the lips during the medal ceremony after Spain won the Women’s World Cup final, The player said the kiss was not done through her consent.
FIFA had already provisionally suspended Rubiales for 90 days following the incident, but the Spanish Football Federation are backing their boss.
But on Saturday, Semra Hunter, football broadcast journalist, who shared a statement from the coaching staff said “the coaching staff of Jorge Vilda are in the midst of preparing their resignation right now, irreversible in nature. They would leave Vilda to stand on his own, who at the moment, reportedly does not plan to resign.”
The BBC reports that several female members of the women’s football coaching staff were forced to sit in the front row during Luis Rubiales’ address to the Spanish football federation yesterday in an attempt to show that they supported his message, according to the statement released by the staff.
The statement from the 11 members of the coaching staff says Rubiales “offered a story that does not reflect in any way what was felt by Jenni Hermoso, who has expressly stated that she felt she was the “victim of aggression”, and that they are resigning from their positions.
“Given the unacceptable attitudes and statements made by the president, they have made the decision to relieve themselves of their duties.
“This part of the technical staff shows its support for the statement published by the players…more specifically those of Jenni,” Hunter said in his tweet.
“Adding to the discomfort of having to attend the assembly…several of the female members of the technical staff were FORCED to sit in the front row, exposing their image and trying to make society and players understand that they shared the theses of the president,” Hunter added.
