NFF President Offers To Donate Trophy At Benue Governor’s Cup, Winner Gets N10m
Nigeria Football Federation President, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, is to donate a trophy to the 2024 edition of Benue Governor’s Cup competition to kick off on 1st October.
During news conference in Makurdi on Thursday, Chairman of Benue State Football Association, Barr. Paul Edeh, stated that the NFF President, has opted to key into the programme to make it a success.
“For over eight years, the Governor’s cup competition was not held in Benue State. The scheme promotes community football as it will bridge the gap lacked for many years which the youth were denied the opportunity of participation.”
The BAFA Chairman made it known that the first winner in the competition will take home N10 million with the second carting away the sum of N6 million, while the third will be going home with N4 million.
He disclosed that the 23 local Government Councils in the state will feature in the fiesta and pay a registration fee of N5 million.
“Kick-off is from October 1, 2024, with the zonal in four zones, commutating to super eight”.
Barr Edeh explained that, apart from the best three carting away various prizes, others participating teams will get orher consolidation prizes.
“This tournament will foster unity, discover talents and stimulate revenue for Benue State coffers.”
While commending Governor Hyacinth Alia for promoting sports development in the state, Chief Edeh, thanked the Commissioner for Sports, Youth and Creativity for for the interest that is making the event a reality.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Sports, Youth and Creativity, Rt. Honorable Terkimbi Ikyange, thanked Benue State Football Association for lobbying Governor Alia, to revival the governor’s cup competition.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr John Akume, the Commissioner, said Benue State has proved that it has talents that played for national teams across the country and beyond in the past at currently.
He assured of Governor Hyacinth Alia’s Administation to sustain funding of sporting activities in the state.
On his part, the Director of Sports, Dr Phillip Nongo, decried the stoppage of the Governor’s Cup in the state for the past eight years and commended Governor Alia for the rejuvenation.
He commended members of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), for adequate reportage of sporting activities in the state and call for sustenance.
