Fifteen inmates from the Malumfashi Satellite Custodial Centre in Katsina, were on Saturday released with each of them getting N10,000 from the Federal Government.

The money was to make transportation to their destinations easy for them.

Making the disclosure at the event of the release was the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Mr Haliru Nababa who was represented by the the Controller of Corrections, Katsina Command, Mr Abdulmumin-Haruna.

Nababa said their release was facilitated by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. He said the released inmates were those who committed minor offences.

He said, “I commend the minister for this laudable initiative aimed at putting smiles on the faces of freed inmates.

“This is the first of its kind in the country and will go a long way in reducing overcrowding in custodial centers.

“This will consequently improve service delivery at the custodial centres in line with international best practice”.
