NUC GIVES LICENSE TO NED NWOKO’S SPORTS UNIVERSITY.
The National Universities Commission, (NUC) has presented operational license to Sports university, Idumuje Ugboko, Delta State founded by philanthropist and international lawyer Hon.Prince Ned Nwoko.
This followed the approval of the university by the federal executive council.FEC acknowledged as the first Sports university in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Speaking to journalists after the presentation of the license by the National Universities commission NUC at Abuja, the proprietor/ pro -chancellor Prince Ned Nwoko, said the approval and License marked the fulfilment of a life dream.
Prince Nwoko who received the certificate of license accompanied by his wife Regina Daniels Nwoko, Olympic Gold Medalist, Chioma Ajunwa and legendary footballer,John Fashanu among other personalities said he had envisioned a university which would combine sports and academic programmes,different from the conventional university.
According to Nwoko:
“Admission into the university will commence hopefully next year. Basically, this is my dream from childhood, to be able to provide an environment where men and women can do sports and also be educated at the same time.
‘’ Our emphasis will be on sports development and techniques, and we must ensure that Nigeria plays in the world of sports no doubt.
‘’ We want to create exceptional support for men and women. This university will give them the best opportunity. A place for Nigerians to get unique exposure in sports and become world stars.
‘’ We also want to make sure that we give every student of our university sports and educational support they need to become a better version of themselves. And it is very unique because, apart from making them sport men and women of their dream; we also provide them good education that makes them sit with their peers globally’’
Nwoko said.
In his remarks at the presentation ceremony, the minister of education, Prof. Adamu Adamu, said government will continue to welcome the establishment of private universities in the country, to meet the needs of Nigerian youths in the area of education.
The executive secretary of the National Universities Commission, (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, called for more investment in education and urged proprietors of private universities to ensure excellence and high standards.
Prince Ned Nwoko,former member, house of representatives and businessman established the Sports university in his Idumuje -Ugboko homeland,In Aniocha North local government area of Delta state to promote community development, create employment, enhance education and boost sports activities in Nigeria.
