But for acting, I would’ve been a newscaster –Ngozi Nwosu

Ngozi Nwosu is a veteran Nigerian actress and producer. She began her acting career in Yoruba Language films before making her home video debut in Living in Bondage.

She is so much loved for her acting prowess that she is practically in a class of her own in the Nollywood.

As the third wife of Kunle Bamtefa (Chief Fuji) in Fuji House of Commotion, she was a delight to watch.

Her character was named Peace, but was she a peaceful wife in the family? Needless to say she was a pivotal part of the commotion that kept the show going for years.

On August 1, Ngozi Nwosu clocked 60 years. She found some time to speak with Sunday Sun via the telephone.

How do you feel being 60 today?

How would I feel? I feel awesome. Yes o, after all I have been through, and I got to this diamond age? My dear, 60 is a milestone. You reach 60, you give God the glory. So, I give God the glory. He is faithful.

What would you want to thank God for today?

Most importantly, I am thanking God for life. The air we breathe, my ear, I have passed through a lot that I don’t even want to talk about. I just want to thank God that I am still standing. I am the last woman standing for what I have been through. You should know, as a journalist. I have gone through a lot. I just want to thank God. I don’t want to talk about it anymore. I am just full of praise today. I want to praise Him; I want to thank Him for keeping me thus far.

People enjoy you as an actress, but if you weren’t acting, what would you have been?

I would have been in show business also. If I weren’t an actress I would have been a newscaster.

Why a newscaster?

I love it. Wow, I used to admire the likes of Julie Coker then, and people like Seinne Allwell Brown.

Tell us a bit about your journey into acting?

I don’t want to talk about it. Today is my birthday. I don’t want to talk about work. Anything about work, no. It’s just about me today.

In your industry, some upcoming actors want to be like you in acting, what advice do you have for them?

Well, for me, nobody is like any other. There is no need being me or trying to be like me. Rather, I would advise them to be true and become what they want to become. They should humble themselves, because that is what would lead them far. Focus and be down to earth. That is what would make you go far. That is what would make you relevant in the industry. In this industry of ours, you have to be focused, you have to humble yourself and you have to move with the tide.

What do you mean by ‘move with the tide’?

I mean innovation. There are new things happening, and they should learn. Like our people say, knowledge is power. You should learn, pick the good ones and leave the bad ones. That’s what I mean by moving with the tide. You should develop yourself more in the good way, not in a bad way. Like now, we have social media awareness. So, flow with the tide. Don’t be rigid. There are some people today who don’t even know how to operate phones. There are some of us that don’t know how to operate phones. You need to move with the trend of things, the good ones, not the bad ones.

You don’t look 60; tell us the secret…

It is God, and I drink water and mind my business. You see, when you put God first, you drink water and mind your business, in this industry, you will look a lot younger because what makes one to be outdated is when you go pokenosing into what they did not send you. When you start doing that you just see that you have unnecessary headaches and unnecessary wrinkles all over because you get abused by substandard people and that kind of thing. Even though people might say, it’s none of my business if you abuse me from today till tomorrow, it doesn’t stick. Na lie, it sticks. So, why don’t you drink water, mind your business? ‘Where dem no call you, no go there’. That’s the secret. And be natural. Be as natural as you can. All this bleaching stuff is not good. I don’t bleach. If you look at me, the way I was from the outset is the way I am till date with regard to my complexion. I take care of my skin. I eat good food. I sleep when I am supposed to sleep. Also, the grace of God is sufficient for me. I will not pursue what is not pursuing me. That is what would make you grow grey hair before time.

I am naturally a bubbling and happy person. Anywhere I go, if I hear music, I would stand up and dance. And that’s what I did before that I still do now. It is just that, now, my dance steps, I have to take it easy.

So, you love dancing?

Yes, more than anything in this world. Most especially, I love oldies. That was when music was music.

Was Fuji House of Commotion your first outing as an actress?

No, Fuji House of Commotion was not my first acting job at all. I made a name before Fuji House of Commotion. I was called Madam V-Boot in Ripples, before Fuji House of Commotion. I was Ego in Living in Bondage, that was before Fuji House of Commotion.
