Your Breast Not Only For You – Medical Doctor Tells Women

Dr. Adamu Ningi, a General Surgeon and Specialist in Surgical Oncology, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi State, said that a woman’s breast is not only for her if she wants to be prevented from breast cancer.

Ningi stated this in Bauchi on Sunday during the 2023 breast cancer awareness day and 5-kilometre walk, organised by BIK Foundation in collaboration with Alheri YS Foundation, VC Jones Care Foundation and AABA Life Foundation.

“I advise my sisters to please breastfeed. The breast is not only for you, it is the only organ in your body that is for three people.

“It is for you, your child and for the man that is in your life.

“So, give the baby breast milk, give the man the chance to palpate the breast and feel if there is anything. These two people will help you to prevent breast cancer.

“Also, breastfeeding protects a woman from breast cancer. The more you breastfeed your baby, the better the protection and the longer you breastfeed, the longer the protection,” he said.

The doctor, who encouraged women to get married within the age of 24 and 25 years and start procreation, explained that the last five months of pregnancy protected the breast from breast cancer.

Also speaking at the end of the 5-kilometre awareness walk, Mr Ibrahim Kashim, the Secretary to the Bauchi state government who is also the founder of BIK Foundation, said testing facilities had been made available for women to be screened for the deadly disease.

“It is important to start something positive even as we walk to create awareness, we should be doing something to assist people to know their status.

“I call on all the NGOs we are collaborating with to come up with some other activities within the year to reach out to communities and screen the people to make sure there is early detection of the disease for proper treatment.

“The Bauchi state government is doing everything in its power to collaborate with some NGOs in ensuring that there is continuous screening of people in their various communities across the state”. He said.

Speaking on behalf of the foundations, Aisha Bappa from Alheri YS Foundation, commended the state government for supporting the annual advocacy programme, adding that the exercise would go a long way in enlightening women in the state.

The theme of the 2023 Breast Cancer Awareness Day is ‘Let Hope Light the Way, Walk Against Breast Cancer’
