ASUU donates rice, others to Sokoto IDP camp

As part of its efforts to contribute to the well-being of the less privileged in society, the Academic Staff Union of University, Sokoto State chapter, donated food to 250 internally displaced persons in Sokoto on Tuesday.

Speaking while handing over the items, which include rice, beans, vegetable oil, salt, seasoning, and water, to the beneficiaries, the chairman, Prof Nurudeen Almustapha, said the gesture was part of ASUU’s help for the less privileged.

He said, “This is part of the programmes initiated by our union to help the needy; this time it is for North West and North Central. we are done with North Central while we started that of North West in Katsina.

“We have done it in Zamfara and Kebbi states, and now in Sokoto today as part of the North West, where we are flagging off the distribution to give 250 members, all women of the IDPs.

“The union earmarked N50m for this exercise in the North Central and North West. Other zones have received theirs.

“The union is looking at it as part of our cooperate responsibilities to help the needy. That is why we tax ourselves a minimum of N2,000 for six months which we gathered together in order to do this.”

The chairman also seized the opportunity to call on the government at all levels to ensure they provide enough security to enable those in the IDP camps across the country to go back to their homes.

He further said ASUU has been advising the Federal Government on how to tackle insecurity in the country and thereby allow everyone living in the camp to go back to their homes.

Speaking earlier, the Special Adviser to the Sokoto State Governor on State Emergency Management Authority, Nasiru Kalambina, assured stakeholders that the current administration is doing everything within its power to ensure those in the camp go back home soonest.

He added that the state government, through SEMA, will soon extend palliatives to the people living in the IDP camp.

Some of the beneficiaries who spoke with our correspondent commended ASUU for the kind gesture while calling on all other groups or individuals in the society to extend their hands of friendship to those living in the camp.
