The town of Badagry welcomed Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, who led the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) in an Awareness Walk in anticipation of the 24th National Women’s Conference (NWC).

This year’s conference theme is “Soar Beyond Boundaries… Enrich Communities.”

Accompanied by the Deputy Governor’s wife, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, and the Chairperson of the 2024 NWC Planning Committee, Prof. Olufunke Adeyeye, Dr. Sanwo-Olu engaged with the women of Badagry to raise awareness about the upcoming conference, set for September 10th and 11th, 2024.

The Awareness Walk started at the iconic First Storey Building, continued to the Agia Tree, and concluded at the Vlekete Slave Market, highlighting Badagry’s significant historical landmarks.

During the walk, Dr. Sanwo-Olu underscored the importance of honouring women who have significantly impacted their communities, drawing inspiration from the biblical Esther. She commended Badagry’s women for their resilience and community spirit.

“The enthusiasm from Badagry’s residents reinforced our message of empowerment, unity, and collective growth,” she remarked.

The First Lady also expressed gratitude to the Chairmen of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Adeniran Olusegun Onilude, and Badagry West LCDA, Hon. Gbenu Joseph, for their warm reception and support. Special thanks were extended to Ovi Manuel Kuponu II for moderating the session at the First Storey Building.

The COWLSO delegation visited two prominent Badagry matriarchs: Mrs. Cecilia Modupe Whenu, widow of the former Chairman of Badagry Local Government, and Alhaja Kikelomo Ladipo, the current Apex Women Leader.

Both women were recognized for their long-standing contributions to women’s empowerment and human rights.

Alhaja Ladipo expressed deep gratitude for the honour, saying, “I am humbled and thankful to Her Excellency and COWLSO for this recognition. It reflects the hard work of the women of Badagry, and I am committed to continuing our efforts for their empowerment.”

Mrs. Cecilia Modupe Whenu, touched by the visit, added, “This visit is a poignant reminder of my late husband’s legacy. I urge Your Excellency to explore more opportunities for Badagry’s youth, who are the future leaders of our community. With your support, we can make a meaningful difference in their lives.”
