For Position Of AFCAC Secretary General, Nigeria’s Adefunke Adeyemi Re-Elected.

Ms. Adefunke Adeyemi has secured re-election as the Secretary General of the African Civil Aviation Commission, following a decisive victory during the 35th Ordinary Plenary Session held in Brazzaville, Congo.

Ms. Adeyemi garnered 22 votes against seven to clinch a second term in office, reaffirming the confidence of AFCAC member states in her leadership and vision for African aviation.

She was first elected on July 15, 2022, during the 34th AFCAC Plenary in Dakar, Senegal, succeeding Mr. Tefera Mekonnen Teferra. Her initial tenure began after Ms. Angeline Simana served as Interim Secretary General.

To ensure credibility, the election process adhered strictly to AFCAC’s Rules of Procedure for Plenary Meetings. An Election Commission, comprising representatives from various African Union regions, oversaw the exercise, reinforcing fairness and transparency.

As the specialised agency of the African Union, AFCAC plays a pivotal role in overseeing civil aviation across the continent. It is also tasked with implementing the Yamassoukro Decision, which underpins the Single African Air Transport Market.

This initiative unites 37 member states in a mission to enhance Africa’s aviation connectivity and competitiveness.

Adeyemi’s re-election is a testament to her achievements in advancing these goals. Her first term was marked by initiatives to improve air transport safety, efficiency, and collaboration, laying the groundwork for sustainable growth in the sector.

With a renewed mandate, Adeyemi is set to intensify efforts to foster a unified and competitive air transport system for Africa. Her leadership promises to keep AFCAC at the forefront of transformative progress in the continent’s aviation sector.

“This milestone represents a proud moment for Nigeria,” observers noted, “highlighting its commitment to strengthening Africa’s aviation ecosystem and promoting continental unity.”
