PSC: Police officers above 60 or 35 years in service to be retired
The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the immediate retirement of senior police officers who have either spent over 35 years in service or are above 60 years of age.
This decision was reached during the Commission’s first extraordinary meeting for 2025, presided over by its Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashimu Argungu. The meeting was attended by key officials, including retired Supreme Court Justice Adamu Paul Galumje, DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd), and Commission Secretary Chief Onyemuchi Nnamani.
A statement by the Commission’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani, highlighted that this move aligns with the Public Service Rule No. 020908 (i & ii), which mandates retirement upon the completion of 35 years in service or the attainment of 60 years of age.
“The Commission had previously approved at its 24th Plenary Meeting in September 2017 that Force entrants should have their appointment date aligned with their enlistment date. However, upon review, the Commission found that this decision contradicted the principles of service merger in the public sector and violated established retirement rules,” Ani stated.
Following this reassessment, the Commission resolved to enforce retirement in compliance with public service regulations.
“The Commission’s decision has been conveyed to the Inspector General of Police for immediate implementation,” the statement concluded.
This development marks a significant step in ensuring adherence to public service guidelines within the Nigeria Police Force.
