Oredo Games 2024: Sports Commission lauds Council Chairman on Schools Five-A-Side Football Tournament

The Edo State Sports Commission has praised the proposed Five-A-Side Primary and Junior Secondary School football Tournament initiatives of the Oredo Government Council for aiming at talent hunting in the state.

The School football games set up to accommodate all wards in the government council is the second phase of the Oredo games2024 launched in March with boxing games heralding the first edition of the event geared towards promoting citizens’ inclusiveness by the Dr. Tom Obaseki-led administration of the Council.

Stating the impact of the initiative on schools across the area, the Chairman of Edo State Sports Commission, Olympian Yusuf Ali, said the initiative is above the line beating all standards he has seen over time.

Ali who expressed satisfaction with the creation of the Oredo games likened it to the creation of Olympic tournaments which are now a major event held worldwide, adding that since the assumption of office by the Council Chairman, there have been spins of people-friendly events that are now yielding results

He noted that, with the Oredo games event stirring as a league tournament, it will offer a wide spectrum of opportunities for youth engagement, which he said would, in turn, remove them from the streets.

Earlier, the Executive Chairman of Oredo Government Council, Dr. Tom Obaseki who is the brain behind the games event said the official engagement with the Sport Commission on Wednesday is part of the preparation to fine-turn the Second Phase of the Oredo games2024 billed for June/July.

Dr. Tom Obaseki informed that plans were underway to inaugurate football league tournaments for the wards in Oredo which is expected to run for a period that would provide excitement and relative peace amongst the people.

Recall that the Council Chairman harped on organizing different tournaments during the three days boxing games competition hosted and won by the council in March at the indoor sport complex of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, where he added that until next year the council will have one event for some time.

Six venues are proposed to host the Primary and Junior Secondary football tournaments sometime between June and July 2024, which is expected to create ultimate fun and opportunity for school wards within the Council.

Various echelons in sports affairs in the state including the Edo State Football Association Chairman, Fred Newton Erhunmwunsen, Permanent Secretary Sports Commission Dr. Emmanuel Igbinosa, Supervisory Councilors, and others attended the meeting.
