Osimhen: Breaking George Weahs’  Goals Record

Super Eagles and Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, is delighted to have broken George Weah’s record of highest-scoring African player in Italian top-flight history, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Nigeria international on Sunday became highest scoring African in Serie A history after netting Napoli’s only goal in their 1-0 win over Fiorentina at the Diego Maradona stadium, PUNCH Sports Extra.

The goal was the 24-year-old 23rd league of the season and his 47th in the league since his move in 2020.

Reacting to the feat, the 24-year-old on his Twitter page said it was an honour to surpass the former World’s best player.

While growing up, I have always admired the great achievements of so many African legends and His Excellency Mr GEORGE WEAH is one of them, in icon in the world of football and also a leader to his people. Someone who has motivated and inspired millions of young talents alike.

“On Sunday, it was a great honor breaking his record as the top-scoring African player in Serie A history, an achievement I will forever cherish, Mr George Weah has set a foundation for excellence for individuals like me to emulate and his legacy will forever be remembered.

Osimhen had equalled Weah’s record for the highest African goalscorer in Serie A with his massive goal against Udinese on Thursday which helped Napoli to clinch their first Serie A title in over three decades.

Having ended a 33-year wait to win Serie A on Thursday, Luciano Spalletti’s men were greeted by a jubilant crowd at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
