Rail transit: We are at 97% – Wike reveals when Abuja metro-line will be launched

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced that the Abuja Rail Mass Transit Scheme, also known as the metro line, is set to be inaugurated in May of this year.

During an inspection tour of the ongoing renovation and rehabilitation works on the Abuja metro line, Wike expressed confidence that the project, currently at 97% completion, will be among those commissioned by President Bola Tinubu to mark his one year in office.

Wike rode on the train from the Abuja Metro Station in the Central Business District to the Airport Train Station, assessing the progress of work at various stations along the route. He expressed satisfaction with the renovation and rehabilitation exercise, highlighting the metro line’s importance to the FCT’s economy.

The minister praised the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), for their commitment to completing the renovation works before the commissioning date.

He emphasized the convenience and importance of the metro line, stating that it will significantly contribute to the development of the FCT’s economy.

Regarding operational costs, including personnel training, Wike disclosed that the FCTA has fulfilled its contractual obligations to the contractors. While acknowledging the expenses involved, he emphasized the need to balance cost-saving measures with the FCT’s interests.
Responding to inquiries about extending rail services to densely populated areas like Nyanya, Wike explained that the Abuja mass rail project is being implemented in phases due to financial considerations. However, he assured that such considerations would be taken into account as development efforts continue in the FCT.
